It is located at Osu between the Independence Square and the Accra Sports Stadium.

History

Prior to its redevelopment, the site had busts of the three notable victims of the 1948 Christiansborg crossroads shooting; namely Corporal Attipoe, Sergeant Adjetey, and Private Odartey Lamptey, who were killed by armed colonial police during a peaceful protest, and an open area which had become bushy and lacked attention.

As part of efforts to enhance attractions especially national monuments, the GTA under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture and in partnership with the Osu Klottey Assembly and Humanlitech, a lightening company took steps to enhance and remodel the park to reflect national pride.

The newly redeveloped site has also been fenced to help better manage the place.

The feat has been achieved and has culminated in the grand commissioning of the Nationalism Park by the President H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Key Features

The redesigned park has a nightlife theme with different lightening designs. It has a sculpture called “Koklozi le kpedzi” which is an ‘Egg on Stone’ monument’ surrounded by Adinkra Symbols. Other key features of the site include a Children’s Playground, a Restaurant, Snack Bar, Souvenir Shop, Washrooms and siting areas. A walk through the park features illuminated pathways which project a sense of pride.

-Improved facilities for visitors like a new washroom and sitting areas.

Results

The newly redeveloped Nationalism Park stands as a beacon of national pride and unity, blending history, culture, and modern aesthetics. Designed with a vibrant nightlife theme, the park features stunning lighting installations that create an enchanting ambiance after sunset.

With its picturesque view of the Atlantic Ocean, the park is home to geese, ostriches, and a charming fish pond, providing visitors with a serene and relaxing environment.

Challenges

Initially, Geese Park faced several challenges, including lacking essential facilities like washrooms and a reception area. Maintenance issues were prevalent, with damaged fences and limited wildlife. Additionally, the park lacked rest areas, activity zones, and sufficient seating for visitors.

Solutions

To address these challenges, Geese Park has undergone significant improvements. The park now boasts a variety of amenities, including:

  • Rest pavilions
  • A children’s playground
  • Picnic tables and camping areas
  • A reception area
  • A water fountain
  • Food courts
  • A “Point and Kill” fish pond
  • A souvenir shop
  • A maze game
  • Restrooms

Results

These comprehensive enhancements have transformed Geese Park into a vibrant and appealing destination for visitors of all ages. The park now offers a comfortable and enjoyable experience, with restrooms, a reception area, a mini golf course, a summer hut, a mini zoo/ranch, a playground, a food court, and picnic areas with tables and benches. Visitors can now explore nature in comfort and enjoy a seamless connection with the natural surroundings, making Geese Park a prime tourist attraction and a valuable revenue generator.

Challenge

Visitors to the site did not have a good receptive facility for use while they waited for their boat rides.

Solution

The project was the construction of a receptive facility which incorporates an information office and visitor restrooms.

The Results

The site is now able to host more people with a comfortable waiting area and clean washrooms than before.

Paragliding Festival has become a major event on Ghana’s tourism calendar attracting many people from across the globe and within the country.

Challenge

The site had a small take-off field, with no suitable washroom. There was also limited sitting area and no catering facility.

Solution

The Paragliding Field Rehabilitation project include the following facilities;

  • Expansion of paragliding take-off site.
  • Construction of defined entrance gate.
  • Pavement block finish of event area.
  • Construction of VIP eating pavilion.
  • Construction of canteen and restaurant.

The Results

The site is able to host more Pilots for simultaneous take-off and provide a receptive environment for the public to enjoy the sport. The upgraded site is a multi-purpose on which can serve the public all year round.

The upgraded Receptive facility at the Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm and Exhibition Centre would honour the memory of Tetteh Quarshie who is credited with being the first person to bring cocoa to Ghana. The upgrade of the facility is to enhance visitor experience.

The Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm and Exhibition Centre is one of many such upgrades at various stages of completion across the country.

Challenge

The site is one of the oldest in the country but has seen very minimal patronage over the years. The plan is to bring the site up to a standard where it could tell the Cocoa story from planting to through processing to production.

Solution

Receptive facility has an audiovisual room for showing orientation videos on various aspects of cocoa. It also has exhibition spaces where different thematic presentations can be mounted to enhance the interpretation of the cocoa story. The Farm is expected to feature prominently in the renewed projection of cocoa as a national asset and the broader dissemination of information about the crop and its contribution to Ghana.

The Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm and Exhibition Centre project include the following facilities;

  • A tourist Information Centre
  • Two exhibition halls
  • An audiovisual orientation room
  • A gift shop
  • New perimeter fencing
  • New washrooms

The Results

The site has a conducive environment for tourists.

With the desire to boost tourism and stimulate the economy post Covid-19, the Government launched the Accra City tour bus as part of the campaign themed #ExperienceGhana #ShareGhana.

The new campaign will create awareness, boost domestic tourism, and help to revive culture of travel among Ghanaians.

Challenge

This is part of the numerous initiatives such as See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana, Feel Ghana, Stay home know Ghana, Ghana Gurus E-Learning platform, Stay Home Discover Ghana and Travel, See, Snap and Win Campaigns that has been put together by the Ghana Tourism Authority to promote domestic tourism, through culture and creative arts.

Solution

The Accra City Tour will expose both Ghanaians and Internationals to historical and cultural sites as well as iconic structures and places within the Metropolis, and subsequently extended to the Regional Capitals of the country accordingly.

The Results

The Accra City Tour bus has provided a means to enable visitors easily tour historical Accra.

The Visit Ghana App results from Destination Single Window Project aimed at creating a harmonized platform for Tourism services. The project is in 3 modules, each aimed at addressing identified needs in the industry.

The Destination Single Window Project project is categorized into 3 modules, each aimed at addressing identified needs in the industry.
– Module 1 focuses on enhancing the tourism levy collection process to raise needed funding for destination marketing, capacity building and infrastructural projects.
– Module 2 aims at automating GTA  processes and providing a seamless interface with relevant stakeholders
– Module 3 targets the promotion of Ghana as an attractive tourism destination.

Challenge

For Service Providers such as Hoteliers, Restauranteurs, Tourism Sites or Attraction Operators, Travel and Tour Operators, Tour Guides, Car Rentals, Chop Bars etc. the platform affords them the opportunity to create micro-websites which they can use to self-manage the promotion and marketing of their products and services. The Visit Ghana App also offers a secure payment platform to enable operators and the public to engage in payments over secure channels which goes straight into the bank and or mobile money accounts of operators.
The APP, “Visit Ghana” can be downloaded from Google Play Store for Android devices and App Store for IOS devices. Several service providers have already signed up to the portal and are advertising their services.

Solution

Since its launch, the App has been downloaded by over three thousand users.

The Results

Service provision to industry stakeholders has been enhanced.

As part of national efforts to upgrade and enhance visitor experience and comfort at our tourism sites, a visitor centre, a new washroom facility, car park, lawns and rest points have been commissioned as part of the phase-lift.

This is part of a renewed focus on developing the domestic market potential through product improvement and aggressive market promotion.

Challenge

The site is one of the culturally and ecologically sensitive sites which lacked the needed facilities to receive visitors.

Solution

The Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary and Cultural Village project include the following facilities;

  • A new Tourist Receptive Facility
  • A modern 7-Seater Washroom (Toilet)
  • Three (3) Visitor Rest Pavilions
  • Wire Mesh and Bamboo fencing of the perimeter and,
  • Paved grounds, Car Park, as well as, painting of existing structures.

The Results

Visitors to the site will have facilities for their convenience while they enjoy nature.

Challenge

Before the refurbishment exercise, the Heroes Garden had portrait statues of Kwegyir Aggrey, Ekem Ferguson and Nana Amonoo I of Anomabo and now has in addition symbolic statues of people of the African diaspora returning “home”.

Solution

The memorial garden and tourist centre at Anomabo was part of the social impact and community development project and part of the of the ‘Year of Return’ programme

  • New sculpture figures placed in the garden.
  • Rehabilitation and repainting of fence wall.

The Kintampo Waterfalls canopy walkway is part of ongoing projects to enhance the visitor experience at the Waterfalls. The walkway is constructed over a valley spanning 90 meters and 80 meters at two locations. It is made up of two cables which serve as the tread-way with 3 high tensioned tendons which form the structural base for the platform.

The new walkway constructed over the Pumpum river overlooking the Kintampo waterfall is to enhance visitor experience at the site. Other aspects of the project include the construction of a new staircase and landscaping of the site. In addition, the receptive facility has been refurbished. These were commissioned by the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo–Addo on Monday, 15th April 2019 at Kintampo. The canopy walkway was constructed through a collaborative effort of the Ghana Tourism Authority and a private developer, Bunso Arboretum Canopy Walkway LTD, with active support from the Traditional Authorities and the Municipal Assembly.

Challenge

The site was destroyed in an unfotunate incident where lives were lost.

Solution

The project included:

  • Removal of loose and weak trees
  • Re-afforestation/tree planting
  • Construction of additional stair way to the waterfall.
  • Introduction of canopy walkway.
  • Refurbishment of receptive facility
  • Construction of additional restroom facility.
  • Introduction of Zipline

The Results

The newly constructed canopy walkway at Kintampo Waterfalls was commissioned by the president of the Republic of Ghana, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo–Addo on Monday, 15th April 2019 at Kintampo.

  • Seven (7) seater toilet under GTDP on-going
  • PPP arrangement to introduce zipline activity progressing steadily.
  • All other works completed.
